How to Start Playing Badminton: The Complete Roadmap for Absolute Beginners

Starting a new sport can feel intimidating, but badminton is uniquely rewarding: it is easy to pick up casually, yet offers infinite depth for those pursuing athletic excellence. Whether your goal is cardiovascular fitness, social play, or competitive tournament pathways, here is how to start effectively.

Step 1: Invest in the Correct Footwear First

Many beginners mistakenly buy an expensive racket first while playing in running shoes. This is the fastest route to ankle sprains and knee pain. Running shoes have elevated heels designed for forward motion; when you lunge sideways on a badminton court, thick running heels roll outward.

Invest in a pair of indoor **non-marking badminton shoes** featuring a flat gum-rubber outsole, low lateral profile, and firm heel counter. This single purchase protects your knees and grants immediate court traction.

Step 2: Choose a Beginner-Friendly Racket

Avoid purchasing heavy steel rackets or ultra-stiff tournament frames endorsed by international champions. As a beginner, your arm and wrist mechanics are not yet conditioned to generate power from stiff shafts.

Select a **4U weight class (80-84 grams)** racket.
Choose an **even-balance or slightly head-light** balance point.
Opt for a **medium-flexible shaft** that acts as a natural spring during clears.
Keep string tension between **20 to 22 lbs** for a forgiving sweet spot.

Step 3: Learn the 'Handshake' Forehand Grip Immediately

The single biggest obstacle holding recreational players back is the 'frying pan' grip (holding the racket face parallel to the palm). While the frying pan grip lets you hit shuttles directly in front of your chest, it completely immobilizes your wrist for backhands, overhead clears, and net tumbles.

Practice the universal **V-Grip (Forehand Grip)**: hold the racket handle as if shaking hands with a friend. The 'V' formed between your thumb and index finger should align with the bevel of the handle. This grip unlocks full forearm pronation and supination.

Step 4: Seek Structured Coaching Early

Playing uncoached for two years reinforces mechanical compensations that can take months of corrective drilling to untangle. Joining a structured academy for just 3 to 6 months establishes correct footwork split-steps, overhead mechanics, and tactical awareness.
