The Essential Badminton Glossary: 35 Terms Every Player and Fan Should Know

Whether listening to coaching instructions, watching Olympic broadcasts, or discussing tactics with doubles partners, familiarity with badminton terminology accelerates your understanding of the game. Here is an authoritative glossary of essential terms.

Core Shots and Strokes

**Clear (Lob):** A high, deep shot driven from the rear court over the opponent to their back baseline. Can be attacking (flatter trajectory) or defensive (high arc).
**Smash:** A high-speed, downward attacking stroke struck from above head height with maximum wrist snap and forearm pronation.
**Drop Shot:** A soft, deceptive stroke hit from the back court that descends sharply immediately after crossing the net.
**Drive:** A flat, fast shot struck at mid-court level that skims parallel over the net tape.
**Net Kill (Brush):** A rapid, downward snap at the net tape to finish off a weak, elevated return.
**Hairpin Net Shot:** A delicate tumble shot played tight to the net where the shuttle arcs upwards and rolls just over the tape.
**Lift:** A high underhand shot played from the forecourt high to the opponent's rear court.
**Flick Serve:** A deceptive serve that mimics a gentle short serve but snaps deep to the opponent's back tramline.

Footwork and Movement Terminology

**Split Step:** A micro-hop performed just as the opponent strikes the shuttle, priming the calf muscles to push off dynamically in any direction.
**Chassé:** A sideways gliding footwork step where one foot pursues the other without crossing over.
**Base Position:** The optimal central court recovery zone (just behind the 'T') to which a player returns after each shot in singles.
**Lunge:** A wide, deep forward step on the dominant leg with heel-to-toe roll used to retrieve low front-court shuttles.

Equipment & Mechanics Jargon

**Sweet Spot:** The central area of the string bed that delivers maximum energy transfer and minimal frame vibration.
**Pronation:** Inward rotation of the forearm and wrist during forehand smashes and clears.
**Supination:** Outward rotation of the forearm and wrist used in backhand strokes.
**Shuttlecock (Birdie):** The high-drag conical projectile with 16 overlapping feathers embedded in a cork base.
**Grip Bevel:** The eight flat facets along the octagonal wooden handle that guide precise thumb and finger positioning.
