Badminton Court Dimensions & Markings: Net Height, Lines & Layout Standards Explained

Whether designing an indoor badminton sports facility or learning which line applies to your game, understanding official court dimensions is critical. The Badminton World Federation enforces precise metric dimensions across all international and club venues.

Overall Court Measurements

The official badminton court is a rectangle measuring:

**Total Length:** 13.40 meters (44 feet)
**Total Width (Doubles):** 6.10 meters (20 feet)
**Total Width (Singles):** 5.18 meters (17 feet)
**Line Width:** All lines must be 40 mm (1.57 inches) wide and painted in a high-contrast color (typically white or yellow) against the court surface.

Net and Post Height Specifications

The net divides the court exactly in half (6.70 meters from each back baseline):

**Net Height at Posts:** 1.55 meters (5 feet 1 inch) above the floor at the doubles side lines.
**Net Height at Center:** 1.524 meters (5 feet) above the floor at the center of the court.
**Net Depth:** The mesh net is 760 mm deep with a 75 mm white tape folded over the cord running along the top.

The slight dip of 26 mm toward the center is an intentional feature of net physics that makes center clears slightly easier than line drives over the posts.

Critical Court Markings Explained

**Short Service Line:** Located 1.98 meters (6.5 feet) from the net on both sides. Every serve must cross beyond this line to be valid.
**Center Line:** Divides the right and left service courts perpendicular to the net.
**Long Service Line for Doubles:** Located 0.76 meters (2.5 feet) inside the rear back boundary line. Serves landing behind this line in doubles are called OUT.
**Side Tramlines (Alleys):** The 0.46-meter (1.5 feet) strip on either side of the court that is OUT for singles but IN for doubles.

Ceiling Height & Lighting Standards

A frequently overlooked aspect of badminton infrastructure is vertical clearance. BWF Level 1 tournament venues require a minimum clear ceiling height of **12 meters**, while commercial club standards should not fall below **9 meters**. Low beams or low-hanging LED fixtures interfere with high clears and defensive lifts.

At S & A Badminton Academy's venues—such as our central facility in Kadavanthra—courts feature professional 9.5-meter vertical clearance, glare-free high-bay lighting, and sprung wooden timber under synthetic tournament mats for maximum shock absorption.
