The Ultimate Badminton Backhand Grip Guide: Thumb Placement for Defense & Lifts

For many amateur badminton players, the backhand is a source of frustration. When caught on the backhand flank, players often resort to frantic body contortions or weak defensive blocks. Yet, with correct thumb positioning, the backhand can generate surprising power and pinpoint control.

The Basic Backhand Grip (Thumb on Wide Bevel)

The standard backhand grip is utilized for backhand drives, mid-court defenses, and net kills directly in front of the body on your non-dominant side:

Rotate your racket handle slightly clockwise (for right-handers) so the widest flat bevel faces up.
Place the flat pad of your **thumb directly against the wide bevel** of the handle.
Your fingers wrap underneath, leaving a small air gap between the handle and your palm.
The thumb acts as a fulcrum lever: pressing the thumb forward propels the racket head through the shuttle with rapid acceleration.

The Bevel Grip (For Rear-Corner Backhands)

When the shuttle travels behind you into the deep backhand corner, placing your thumb flat on the wide bevel forces your elbow into an awkward angle, causing you to slice the shuttle. Instead, transition to the **Bevel Grip**:

Place your thumb along the **diagonal bevel** (the 45-degree angle between the wide and narrow bevels).
This allows your forearm to achieve maximum supination (external rotation), enabling clean, square impact even when striking the shuttle slightly behind your body.

Avoiding the 'Palm Grip' Error

The most prevalent backhand flaw is resting the base of the palm against the grip. This eliminates all lever motion from the fingers, forcing your shoulder to generate 100% of the swing speed. Ensure your palm remains detached from the butt of the racket to allow nimble finger snaps.

Structured Execution & Key Coaching Pointers

To execute this effectively on court, certified mentors emphasize three core technical checkpoints:

**Preparation & Stance:** Listen for the acoustic sound: a clean sweet-spot strike produces a sharp 'crack', not a dull thud.
**Biomechanical Execution:** Keep the non-racket arm elevated throughout the preparation to maintain rotational balance.
**Recovery & Next-Shot Transition:** Use resistance bands off the court to strengthen the rotator cuff and forearm pronators.

Common Errors & How to Correct Them

Players frequently encounter predictable roadblocks when practicing this topic. Be mindful of these three errors:

1.**Hitting the shuttlecock behind the head plane, which strains the rotator cuff and kills downward angle.** Focus on conscious relaxation and smooth acceleration.
2.**Decelerating the swing right before impact out of fear of hitting the shuttle out of bounds.** Maintain lower-body dynamic tension and split-step timing.
3.**Failing to reset the racket head to chest level immediately after completing the follow-through.** Practice multi-angle video review or consult an NIS/BWF certified coach.

Practical Training Sets & Repetitions

Incorporate this structured routine into your weekly training schedule:

**Warm-Up Phase:** 5 minutes of dynamic joint mobilization and shadow movement.
**Drill Volume:** 4 to 6 sets of 15 to 20 focused repetitions with a 45-second recovery interval between sets.
**Pressure Match Application:** Conclude with 15 minutes of conditional match play where points scored using this specific technique earn double value.
